Information Processed by Somnera
To provide informational estimates of nighttime acoustic activity, Somnera processes the following types of data exclusively on your device:
| Data Type | Purpose | Storage | Transmission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microphone Audio | Estimation of sounds compatible with snoring and possible acoustic pauses | Local | Never |
| Motion Data (accelerometer/gyroscope) | Context about iPhone movement and tilt; it does not validate breathing or apnea | Local | Never |
| Apple Health Data (heart rate, SpO2, sleep stages) | Multimodal correlation for metabolic synergy index | Local | Never |
| Audio Recordings (event clips) | Personal playback of detected events for self-assessment | Local | Never |
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Somnera uses machine learning models (CoreML) for the acoustic classification of sleep respiratory events. It is important to note:
- 100% Local Execution: AI models run directly on your iPhone Apple chip's Neural Engine. No audio data is ever sent to external servers for processing.
- No Remote Training: Somnera does not use your personal data to train, improve, or refine machine learning models in the cloud. Models are static and distributed packaged inside the application.
- Local Spectral Analysis: digital signal processing (DSP), including Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Crest Factor calculation, and frequency band energy analysis, is performed in volatile memory and discarded immediately after evaluation.
Apple Health Integration (HealthKit)
If you grant explicit consent, Somnera can interact with Apple Health in the following ways:
- Reading: Somnera reads heart rate, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and sleep stages recorded by Apple Watch or other compatible devices, exclusively to calculate biometric correlation metrics.
- Writing: Somnera can save session summaries when supported by Apple Health. Possible acoustic pauses are not apnea diagnoses.
Total User Control
HealthKit integration is completely optional. You can enable or disable it at any time from the application Settings. Even when active, Health data remains stored locally by the iOS operating system, and Somnera has no access to it outside of Apple's native APIs.
Data Storage
All data generated by Somnera is stored exclusively on the device's local storage using SwiftData (Apple's native database):
- Sleep sessions, snoring events, apnea events, and biometric metrics are saved in a local SQLite database encrypted by the iOS data protection system.
- Audio recordings are stored as
.caffiles in the application's private directory, protected by the iOS sandbox. - You can delete all your data at any time from the "Settings → Delete all sessions" section inside the application.
- If you uninstall Somnera, all associated data is automatically and irreversibly deleted from the device.
Data Somnera DOES NOT Collect
For your absolute peace of mind, Somnera does not collect or have access to:
- Your name, email address, or any personally identifiable information.
- Your geographical location (GPS).
- Your contact list, calendar, or photos.
- Advertising identifiers or tracking data between applications (tracking).
- Usage analytics data sent to third-party services (no integration with Google Analytics, Firebase, Mixpanel, or any external telemetry SDK).
Third-Party Services
Somnera does not integrate third-party SDKs for data collection, advertising, or analytics. The application uses exclusively the native frameworks provided by Apple:
- AVFoundation — Audio capture and playback.
- SoundAnalysis / CoreML — Local acoustic classification.
- HealthKit — Reading and writing biometric data (with consent).
- CoreMotion — Inertial sensor tracking for actigraphy.
- SwiftData — Local session persistence.
- StoreKit — Management of voluntary donations (no mandatory subscriptions).
Security
Somnera benefits from the native security layers of the iOS operating system:
- Application Sandbox: audio files and the session database are confined to Somnera's private container, inaccessible to other applications.
- Data Encryption at Rest: iOS automatically encrypts application data when the device is locked, using AES-256 linked to the hardware's Secure Enclave.
- No Network Transmission: since there is no communication with remote servers, transmission intercept vectors (MITM) are completely eliminated.
User Rights
As a Somnera user, you have the following rights over your data:
- Access: you can consult all your sessions, events, and recordings directly from the application.
- Deletion: you can delete individual sessions or all sessions from the application Settings.
- Portability: your health data synchronized with Apple Health is accessible from Apple's Health app and can be exported at any time.
- Permission Revocation: you can revoke access to the microphone, motion sensors, and Apple Health at any time from your iOS system settings.
